This is a highly innovative programme developed by the Reso Climat Mali with MFC as the secretariat, and Asdi (Sida – Swedish International Development Agency) Mali. The Reso Climat Mali is the Malian climate network and has 87 member organisations including NGOs, civil society and educational and research institutions. The project has been designed to support local civil society effort to work in partnership with poor populations in Mali to provide concrete support to adapt their lives and livelihoods to the impacts of Climate Change. The project zone is the whole of Mali.

Climate Change has repeatedly been highlighted as one of the major dangers for our shared planet, to impact far more severely on the world’s poor. This is why today climate change has been integrated into development policy an international cooperation. It is therefore urgent to develop strategies to reduce vulnerability to natural disasters and improve resilience to the impacts of climate change.

In this context, the Government of Sweden launched the 2008 Climate Change Initiative (CCI) to support adaptation and mitigation efforts in a range of developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. In Africa, Mali and Burkina Faso were selected for the period 2009-2011. This assistance aims to support government and civil society initiatives in the beneficiary countries in order to foster coordination and synergy with other donors.

The program will last 3 years (2009-2012), with a total budget of SEK 26.5 million (equivalent to 3 million Euro or 1.8 billion Francs CFA). The program is funded by Asdi (l’Agence Suédoise de Coopération au Développement International).

The overall objective of the programme is to build resilience to the impacts of Climate Change of the poorest populations in Mali. Within this overall goal the immediate objectives are to support adaptation initiatives to the impacts of climate change to benefit vulnerable groups in Mali; and to build capacity of members of the Reso Climat Mali to support vulnerable groups in adaptation to the impacts of Climate Change.
